Ohio State Wins EcoCAR 2 Competition

OHIO STATE HAS WON THE ECOCAR 2 COMPETITION!!! The Ohio State University has brought home an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) national championship. This is only the second championship that the team has won in past 19 years of competing.

The Ohio State team finished first place overall in Year Three of the EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future competition with a total of 903 points out of 1000 possible. University of Washington finished up in second place (808 points/1000), while Penn State finished third (710.2 points/1000).

The team was highly regarded by the industry sponsors, competition organizers and fellow competitors. “I would hire this team as consultants”, “the judges said this was a vehicle fit to be sold on the market”, and “a presentation that will be used as a standard in the industry” were just a few of the quotes from the evening. In addition, the team placed in the top two of EVERY static presentation – so even the ones we didn’t win, we were still a close second.

The team won a total of $32,000 in award money!! Award money will be filtered back into the program to help fund the first year of the EcoCAR 3 competition – the next 4-year Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition to redesign a Chevrolet Camaro.

Awards won by the Ohio State University team include: Best Progress Reports; Best Modeling and Simulation Modeling White Paper; Best Pre-Competition Safety and Technical Inspection; Best Communications Plan; Best Influencer Campaign; Best Media Report; 1st Place ETAS ECU Excellence Award, Best dSPACE Embedded Success Award, 2nd place MathWorks Modeling Award, 2nd place Best Collaboration with a Clean Cities Coalition, Best Outreach Event Presentation, 1st place Communications Program, Best Business Presentation, 1st place Business Program, Best Static Consumer Acceptability Presentation, Best Electrical Presentation, Best Controls Presentation, Best Final Technical Report, and Lowest Criteria Emission, Lowest Petroleum Usage.

The team is ecstatic.   There are no words to describe how amazing these past three years have been. Just a small team of Ohio State students (with only 45 students involved) built an advanced vehicle technology fit to be sold in the automotive industry. Check out the photos on the team’s Facebook page here.

The past three years have been a tremendous opportunity to get hands-on, real world experience that is truly unmatched by anything in the classroom. Thank you so much to the industry sponsors and leaders that have made this competition possible – we can’t thank you enough!!

As the Communications Manager, for the past four years, I can tell you – I am not sure what to do with myself after today… thanks for the tremendous following and support. It has been an honor being able to tell you about the Ohio State EcoCAR 2 team – the best advanced vehicle technology competition team out there. GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

Until then –#OutreachOut (Sarah Jadwin, Ohio State Communications Manager,
